Igor Romanovich Klebanov ( Russian И́горь Романович Клеба́нов , transcription Igor Romanovich Klebanow ; born March 29, 1962 in the Soviet Union ) is a Russian-American theoretical physicist who deals with string theory.

Klebanov came to the United States as a teenager and studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in 1982 and received his doctorate in 1986 under Curtis Callan at Princeton University . He was a post-doctoral student at SLAC until 1989 . In 1989 he became Assistant Professor, 1995 Associate Professor and 1998 Professor of Physics at Princeton University.

In 2012/13 he was Acting Director of the Princeton Center for Theoretical Science (representing Paul Steinhardt ) and was previously Associate Director.

In the 1990s he was one of the pioneers of the duality between gravitation and gauge theories ( AdS / CFT correspondence ), i.e. the description of strongly coupled gauge theories in d spacetime dimensions through gravity in certain curved d + 1 dimensional spaces ( anti-de-sitter spaces ).

He also gave a dual description of a gauge theory with color confinement - for the QCD in four spacetime dimensions that is actually of interest , however, there is still no simple dual description.

He was a Sloan Research Fellow from 1991 to 1995 and a Presidential Young Investigator from 1991 to 1997. In 2010 he was a Guggenheim Fellow . He is a fellow of the American Physical Society . In 2012 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 2016 to the National Academy of Sciences . For 2017 he was awarded the Pomeranchuk Prize .

He is a US citizen. He has been married since 1991 and has two daughters.
