Steven Gubser

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Steven Scott Gubser (born May 4, 1972 in Tulsa , Oklahoma ; † August 3, 2019 at Chamonix ) was an American theoretical physicist who dealt with string theory .

Life

In 1989 Gubser won the International Physics Olympiad as a student and in 1990 a silver medal at the International Chemistry Olympiad.

Gubser received his PhD from Princeton University in 1998 with Igor Klebanov . As a postdoctoral fellow , he was a Junior Fellow at Harvard University . In 2000 he was back at Princeton University as an assistant professor . In 2001 he became a professor at Caltech and from 2002 he was a professor at Princeton.

He was one of the founders of the duality between gauge theory and gravitation (also AdS / CFT correspondence ), which makes it possible to describe four-dimensional gauge theories (preferably supersymmetrical gauge theories) through gravitational physics in five-dimensional curved spaces. He also applied this in the physics of quark-gluon plasma in heavy ion collisions.

Gubser was a fellow of the American Physical Society . Gubser received the Gribov Medal from the European Physical Society and the Blavatnik Award from the New York Academy of Sciences . He was the Scientific Secretary for the Aspen Center of Physics . In 2009 he was a Guggenheim Fellow .

He died on August 3, 2019 in a climbing accident in the French Alps.
