Life

Geppert studied law at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow from 1908 to 1912 . This was followed by a study of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow under Jacek Malczewski and Stanisław Dębicki until 1920 .

From 1925 to 1927 he studied in Paris on a grant from the Polish Artists' Union . From 1928 he lived in Krakow again. He worked as an illustrator for the magazines "Czas" and "Głos Plastyków". Before the Second World War he was a member of the Polish artist groups “Nowa Generacja” (in Lemberg) and “Zwornik”.

After the war he moved to Breslau; there he was largely responsible for the reopening of the Academy of Fine Arts in Breslau , whose first post-war rector (1946 to 1950) he was. On April 25, 2008, the university was named after him. During his time in Wroclaw he worked for the magazine “Przegląd Artystyczny”. Between 1950 and 1961 and from 1966 to 1974 he had his own painting studio. In 1962 he was one of the founders of the Wrocław group of artists.

Geppert was exhibited many times in Poland (Lemberg, Krakow, Breslau and Warsaw) - sometimes also posthumously. His works were shown internationally in Paris (autumn salons 1925, 1927 and 1928), in Los Angeles (on the occasion of the 1932 Olympics) and in Pittsburgh ( International Art Exhibition , 1938). Geppert was the recipient of various high awards, including the order of Polonia Restituta . An art competition in Wroclaw is named after him: Konkurs im. Eugeniusza Gepperta . A small exhibition in the Rybisch Palais in Breslau, where Geppert lived from 1946 to 1979, is dedicated to him.

The oeuvre Geppert is a continuation of the tradition of Polish Romanticism and the French Post-Impressionism . In his early work he was strongly influenced by his teacher Malczewski (historical symbolism) and Piotr Michałowski (romanticism). Images of horses, riders and cavalry were created. In the mid-1920s he was influenced by the post-impressionists Maurice de Vlaminck and Henri Edmond Cross . In addition to historical pictures, he created colorful portraits, nudes and still lifes (especially blue and green tones). From the late 1950s, influenced by Raoul Dufy , his paintings became lighter and lighter.
