Piotr Graf Michałowski (born July 2, 1800 in Cracow , † June 9, 1855 in Krzysztoforzyce near Cracow) was a Polish painter.

Life

As a 13-year-old boy he took art lessons from Michał Stachowicz and continued his painter training in 1817 with Józef Brodowski and from 1818 with Franciszek Lampi . In addition to art, Michałowski studied mathematics, natural sciences, economics and humanities at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and law and history at the University of Göttingen . 1827-1830 he headed the organization of the iron and steel industry at the State Treasury Commission in Warsaw . After the defeat of the November uprising , for which he organized arms and ammunition production, he fled to Paris . From there he returned to Krakow in the Austrian part of Poland in 1835. 1848-1853 he headed the city of Krakow as an administrative councilor.

In his spare time he was a painter. He mainly painted portraits, battles and pictures of horses. He is considered to be one of the most important representatives of Romanticism in Polish painting. His pictures met with great attention from Pablo Picasso during his visit to Warsaw.

  • 2012: Commemorative coin with a face value of 2 złoty from the National Bank of Poland.
