Aleksandar Michajlow Balabanow ( Bulgarian Александър Михайлов Балабанов ; born January 18, 1879 in Štip , today Macedonia ; † November 30, 1955 in Sofia , Bulgaria ) was a well-known Bulgarian literary and linguist ( classical philologist ), translator and literary critic.

Aleksandar Balabanow was born in the east Macedonian city ​​of Štip in 1879 . Like many other Macedonian Bulgarians , his family moved to Bulgaria , liberated from the Ottoman Empire . He studied classical philology at the University of Leipzig and the University of Erlangen , where he received his doctorate in 1904. Between 1904 and 1912 he worked as a teacher for classical languages ​​at the “First Boys' Gymnasium” in Sofia. In 1921 he founded the Institute for Classical Philology at Sofia University and was its first director.

Balabanow was a co-founder and member of the Macedonian Scientific Institute , as well as a long-time lecturer at the St. Kliment Ohridski University in Sofia . He was also a member of the BMARK ( Bulgarian Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Committee / Български Македоно-Одрински революционни комитети ).

In addition to his scientific work, he was also an editor for various magazines and newspapers: magazines "Chudozhnik" ( Bulgar . Художник = painter) from 1905 to 1906 and "Prometej" ( Bulgar . Прометей = Prometheus) between 1937 and 1943, the newspapers "Wreme" ( Bulgar . Време = time) from 1908 to 1909 and "Razwigor" ( Bulgar . Развигор ) between 1921 and 1937.
