Location of the Nossa Senhora da Azinheira in Portugal.

The late Romanesque church Nossa Senhora da Azinheira ( Portuguese Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Azinheira do Outeiro Seco ) is located on the outskirts of the municipality ( Freguesia ) Outeiro Seco about three kilometers northwest of the district town ( concelho ) Chaves and about 700 meters from the banks of the Tâmega , in the district of Porto , in northern Portugal .

history

Nossa Senhora da Azinheira, west portal.

The patronage church was first mentioned in a document in 1235, until the adjoining monastery was closed, it belonged to the Archdiocese of Braga .

In the 14th and 15th centuries, the church underwent a series of renovations, a fresco in the interior of the church is dated 1535. Further alterations followed in the 18th century, including a tombstone from 1767 that was built into the triumphal arch .

Various restoration work has been carried out since 1937, accompanied by the gradual dismantling of the church to its late Romanesque origins.

For example, the most important frescoes, which had been badly damaged by moisture and candle smoke, were removed, restored and distributed to the Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis in Porto and the Alberto Sampaio Regional Museum in Guimarães . The graves in the interior of the church were reburied and the later portal porch was completely dismantled.

At the same time, Direção-Geral dos Edifícios e Monumentos Nacionais (DGEMN) , which was entrusted with the maintenance, acquired the surrounding land in order to redesign the immediate surroundings of the church accordingly.

Since 1938 the church has been registered and protected as IIP - Imóvel de Interest Público .

architecture

Nossa Senhora da Azinheira, corbels.

The simple, single-nave granite church is oriented west-east and has a slightly trapezoidal floor plan. In the east there is an almost square choir, whose flight is slightly offset to the south. A sacristy is attached to the north of the building , which is accessible from both the choir and the church interior. A triumphal arch, probably built or rebuilt in the 18th century, separates the choir from the nave.

In addition to a simple, small entrance in the south, the nave is unlocked by a west portal decorated with two archivolts . The arches rest on pillars whose capitals are decorated with floral, zoomorphic and anthropomorphic representations. The capitals of the two pillars in the choir that support the arch of the narrow window are decorated in the same way . The numerous corbels that support the cornice are an outstanding architectural decorative element . With only a few exceptions, they are presented as human portraits, e.g. T. but also worked out as animal heads (dogs).

Frescoes

Nossa Senhora da Azinheira, interior.

Before the restoration, the nave and choir were completely adorned with frescoes, which were mainly about the New Testament and the history of the saints. The frescoes on the north wall showed Nossa Senhora , various apostles , St. Christopher , the Lord's Supper and the persecution of the innocent. The cycle of the south wall was dedicated to the life of Jesus . Baptism, the Passion , the Descent from the Cross and Entombment, and the Resurrection .
