Although he is studying medicine, he is a real strolling student. He recently failed the Rigorosum . In spite of or perhaps because of his carelessness, the problem child Franz is the darling of the grieving old mother, who sacrifices the last penny for himself. The lotter boy thanks her badly, when he is again short of money, Franz even steals her family's seal to relocate it.

When Christmas Eve approaches, Eduard and his bride, a young pianist, have already arrived for dinner with their close family. Mother Popjel's intention was to give the older son the seal, a family heirloom from his father, as a Christmas present. But now she can't find it. She is all the more disappointed when she discovers a pawn shop slip in a book in Franz, which proves that Franz must have redeemed the seal for cash. And again the old mother forgives her youngest. But Franz always sinks deep into the morass of his own irresponsibility and unscrupulousness. When he hatched his worst crook to date, he suddenly fell seriously ill. In his fellow student Esther Maria, however, he finds someone who looks after him and looks after him. Thanks to her help and in view of the dying mother, Franz went through a deep purification and from then on he wanted to become a sincere studiosus and above all a useful member of society.

Reviews

“EA Dupont has resolved the cozy family story of the“ prodigal son ”, which takes place here in the environment of an elegant, Silesian town hall, into an exciting series of images that Willy Zeyn provided with a special taste. The technical climax of the film is when a steamer gets stuck in the ice, on which the intrepid Friedrich Zelnik, the main character, climbs ashore on a rope that has been thrown ashore. Ferdinand Bonn plays the second main role with well-known virtuosity and of course the violin as well, and Friede Richard, with her mild motherliness, advocates the role of the old lady, who remains connected with her two sons in happiness and sorrow. “This week in the marble house you can see a play that has been worked out with all the subtleties based on Karl Hauptmann's novella 'Sturmflut' ( your son ) by E. A. Dupont. The strong and elegant effect that emanates from this film results not least from the excellent portrayal, for which Friedrich Zelnik, Ferdinand Bonn and Friede Richard in particular made a name for themselves, and the very skillful direction, which comes from Willy Zeyn.
