The Ikarus 256 was a type of omnibus from the Hungarian bus manufacturer Ikarus . It was produced from 1977 to 2002 in parallel with the slightly larger Ikarus 250 .
Various engine variants from Rába (partly under license from MAN) and Detroit Diesel (especially for the non-European market) were available for the bus . In the GDR variants, the water-cooled MAN-Rába 6-cylinder engine D 2156 HM6U with 10,350 cm 3 and 192 hp was used. A manually shiftable, synchronized five-speed gearbox was used as the gearbox ; a six-speed gearbox was also offered as an option. The engine was located underfloor in the rear and drove the rear axle of the vehicle via a single-disc dry clutch , the gearbox and a planetary gearbox . With this drive unit, the bus reached a top speed of over 100 km / h.
Like the Ikarus 250, the bus had rigid axles, but unlike the Ikarus 255, it had air suspension . With an empty weight of 10.4 t, the permissible total weight was 16.0 t. The pneumatic brake acted on all wheels and was supplemented by an engine brake and a spring-loaded parking brake . Power steering was also used on this bus .
A self-supporting structure was placed on the floor pan. The design corresponded to that of the Ikarus 250 except for details. As a touring coach, the bus offered 45 seats. Two hand-operated, outward-opening doors were used as doors, the front door was positioned in the front overhang. Later, a single-leaf swing door was also offered as the front door. During the production period, different body variants with different numbers of seats and one or two passenger doors were produced.
Deliveries to the GDR under the Comecon Agreement began in 1977. In 1988 there were 626 Ikarus 256 in the GDR.
