The Ikarus 630 and Ikarus 620 were buses from the Hungarian bus manufacturer Ikarus . The Ikarus 620, which was produced from 1958, was designed as a city ​​bus with air-operated folding doors, while the Ikarus 630 derived from it was intended for overland transport. The technical basis was the Ikarus 60 or 601. The type 620 or 630 was produced over a longer period in parallel with the types Ikarus 31 and its further development, Ikarus 311 and Ikarus 66 . Production was stopped in 1971.

Engine and chassis

As a drive unit on the front was a six-cylinder water-cooled cyclone chamber - diesel engine of the type D-614 of the Hungarian producer Csepel with a displacement of 8275 cm 3 mounted with a power of 107 kW (145 hp). Together with a manually shifted, partially synchronized five-speed gearbox , it drove the rear axle of the vehicle via a single-disc dry clutch and an external planetary gearbox . With this drive unit, the bus reached a top speed of 78 km / h. The same drive unit was also used on the Ikarus 66 and the Ikarus 55 coach .

In contrast to the outwardly similar, somewhat smaller Ikarus 31 , the 620/630 series did not have a self-supporting structure. The chassis consisted of a ladder frame on which - similar to the trucks of the time - the engine was arranged at the front. A bus structure was placed on the floor pan, which was designed as a front control . Leaf-sprung rigid axles with telescopic shock absorbers were used on the chassis . With an empty weight of 8.35 t, the permissible total weight was 13.85 t. The pneumatic brake acted on all wheels and was supplemented by a mechanical parking brake . For the first time, the mechanical steering was available with hydraulic steering assistance.

Passenger compartment

The passenger compartment of the city bus Ikarus 620 had 20 seats and 50 standing places, the Ikarus 630 offered 27-38 seats. In the course of the long production period, different body variants with different numbers of seats were produced. Two electro-pneumatically operated double folding doors or two manually operated doors opening outwards were available for passenger exchange . Due to the location of the engine, the front passenger door was located behind the front axle. Due to this arrangement, the bus was only partially suitable for one-man operation. Above the front axle there was a short flap door for the driver and front passenger on both sides. In order to facilitate one-man operation, the buses were equipped with two individual seats at the front instead of a bench from 1963, and the partition wall to the passenger compartment was omitted.

design

The layout of the components was basically adopted from the Ikarus 31 and 311 built in parallel , but the design was revised. Instead of the front mask comprising the radiator grille and headlights on the Ikarus 311 , the trapezoidal cooling air inlet was surrounded by a chrome frame, while the side by side double headlights were emphasized by covers. The indicators sat in a teardrop-shaped disguise. The windshield was designed as a four-part, curved panoramic window. The city buses had a destination or route display above the windshield, which some 630s also had.

use

The GDR imported the Ikarus 620 and 630 types from 1959 to 1971. In September 1988 there were 170 such vehicles.

Due to the need for buses with a larger capacity in city traffic, the Budapest transport company had a number of existing 620 buses converted into articulated buses by the Mávaut in the 1960s , similar to the previous 601 buses. The front end was cut off behind the rear axle and one was added Saddled trailer, which initially received two axles one behind the other, one axle and two doors if axles with sufficient load capacity were available. A 1,270 mm long bellows connected the two vehicle parts. These large-capacity vehicles then had a total length of 15,365 mm and had three 1170 mm wide double folding doors.
