Il mio corpo (Italian for “My Body”) is a film by Michele Pennetta that was first made available online to participants of the Visions du Réel documentary film festival in April 2020.

action

The teenager Oscar and his older brother Roberto work for their father in his junkyard. They collect scrap metal at the illegal landfill in Sicily to support the family, and it's a grueling job.

For the African immigrant Stanley, the worst seems to be behind him. He has his own little apartment, a two year permit, and a friend to share the food and memories with. In exchange for the hospitality of the Sicilian priest, he keeps the church clean, does gardening, and tends to the sheep. Stanley could leave Sicily and seek his fortune in a country that gives him a real chance, but something is keeping him there.

A job in the hinterland of Sicily brings Oscar and Stanley together for a brief moment in their lives.

production

Directed by Michele Pennetta , who also wrote the script together with Arthur Brügger and Christian Tarabini . It is the third short film by the Italian-born director, who lives in Switzerland, which he shot in Sicily and which deals with the situation of the inhabitants in the less populated interior of the island. Pennetta commented on this place: "When I first traveled to this region, it felt like I was going to the site of a nuclear disaster: everything seemed to be deserted." With Il mio corpo , he described the scars of a disaster that is marked by the end of economic activity, endemic unemployment, a slow deterioration of the environment, the difficulties of integration and the insecurity of the Sicilian youth, Pennetta told Variety .

Paolo Ferrari acted as cameraman .

Nathalie Rebholz composed the film music .

The film celebrated its virtual premiere at Visions du Réel at the end of April 2020 . Here it will be made available to participants online until the beginning of May 2020.
