The Ilana Goor Museum ( Hebrew מוזיאון אילנה גור) is a private museum in the winding old town of Jaffa ( Old Jaffa ) in Tel Aviv . The museum was founded in 1995 by Ilana Goor , an Israeli artist and art collector. Their unusual collection has sometimes been referred to as the "artistic jungle".

history

The museum is located in Old Jaffa in a building from 1742 above the harbor. The builder was Jakob Zonana , one of the leaders of the Jewish community in Constantinople . In the second half of the 19th century, a soap and perfume factory was housed in the building. After the Second World War , the building served various purposes, including a. as a synagogue and accommodation.

In the 1970s, Old Jaffa was increasingly discovered by artists who lived and worked there, including Ilana Goor. Numerous small studios and galleries opened. In 1983 Goor bought the dilapidated crusader residence in the middle of the historic center of Jaffa and renovated the building that initially served her as a home and studio. In September 1995 the artist also opened the museum.

collection

The works of art are exhibited on several floors of the building as well as the roof terrace with sea views. In addition to Ilana Goor's own works - sculptures, unusual pieces of jewelry, as well as futuristic retro furniture - the collection also includes African and Oriental art, ancient artifacts, sacred art from the Middle Ages and modern art from the modern era; u. a. Sculptures by Henry Moore , Alexander Archipenko and Diego Giacometti , pictures by Josef Albers or a design chair by Frank Gehry .

The museum is open Sunday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Ilana Goor

Ilana Goor was born in Tiberias , Israel . Her grandfather, Josef Sapir , was a co-founder of the Bezalel School , an art movement in Palestine in the early 20th century. Goor began sculpting in Los Angeles in the late 1960s . In 1972 the California Museum of Science and Industry in Los Angeles showed a first exhibition of her works. Exhibitions around the world followed; Sculptures of her are u. a. installed at the Yad Vashem Memorial in Jerusalem.

Goor is self-taught ; she never studied art.
