Ilex gardneriana is an extinct species of holly ( Ilex ). It was endemic to the Nilgiri Mountains in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu .

description

Ilex gardneriana was a shrub or small tree , the growth form of which was creeping at the base and then gradually erect. The bark was almost smooth.

The leaves were arranged in groups of three. The leaf blades were lanceolate-ovate with a round base and they were pointed on both sides with a length of 5 to 7.6 centimeters . The edge of the leaf was jagged.

The flowering period was from January to February. The flowers were solitary or in a dold-like inflorescence. The 1.2 cm long flowers were five-fold with a double flower envelope. There were five pink sepals and five petals. The sepals were shorter than the petals . The front petals, slightly arched at the tip, formed a thread-like spur that was as long as the flower. The upper crown lobe was shorter than the front one.

The capsule fruit was elongated, pointed and smooth.

Occurrence and habitat

Ilex gardneriana grew on moist pastureland on the western slopes of the Nilgiri Mountains.

status

Ilex gardneriana was collected only once in 1859 at an altitude of 1829 meters on the Sispara Ghat. An intensive search in the region in the last century was unsuccessful. The reasons for the disappearance of this species are the transformation of the habitat into human settlements and agricultural areas.

Ilex gardneriana was rated in 1998 (new monitoring required) by the IUCN from "Extinct" = "extinct".
