Ilija Nikolaew Petrow ( Bulgarian Илия Николаев Петров ; born July 9, 1903 in Razgrad , † May 18, 1975 in Sofia ) was a Bulgarian painter.

Life

From 1921 to 1926 Petrow studied at the Art Academy in Sofia and from 1926 to 1928 in Munich . From 1941 he worked as a professor at the Sofia Art Academy . In 1971 he became a member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences .

He used a realistic style in his painting. His works often dealt with motifs from recent Bulgarian history, such as the September uprising in 1923 and the partisan struggle during World War II , taking the perspective of the then socialist Bulgarian state.

His students included Georgi Baew , Ivan Kirkov and Damjan Saberski . As a hero of socialist work , he was awarded the Georgi Dimitrov order and in 1970 the Dimitrov Prize.
