Ilmari Manninen

Ilmari Justus Andreas Manninen (born September 2, 1894 in Vyborg , † June 14, 1933 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish ethnographer .

Life

Ilmari Manninen attended the University of Helsinki from 1912 to 1916 and focused on Finno-Ugric ethnography and history, as well as on the Finnish language and literature . In 1919 he founded the City Museum in Naantali and worked there as a teacher at the local school until 1922. In 1922 he received his Ph.D. and in the same year was appointed director of the Estonian National Museum in Tartu . He gave his inaugural lecture at the University of Tartu (German: Dorpat ) on October 16, 1924.

In 1929 he moved to Helsinki to take up the post of head of the ethnographic department of the Finnish National Museum and lectured on Finno-Ugric ethnography at the University of Helsinki. After returning from a one-year study trip to Hungary , Czechoslovakia and the Balkans , he caught a cold with a high fever while swimming and died of it on July 14, 1935 in Helsinki.
