Ilse Mertel (born September 8, 1943 in Zauchtel , Moravia ) is an Austrian state employee and politician ( SPÖ ) at rest. Mertel was a member of the National Council between 1990 and 2002 .

education and profession

After primary school in Klagenfurt, Mertel attended the local secondary school, which she graduated with the Matura in 1962 . She then studied political science and law at the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz and graduated in 1970 with the academic degree Dr. iur. from.

After graduating from high school, Mertel worked as a technical draftsman and completed her legal practice after graduation. She then worked for an insurance company and from 1971 a lawyer at the office of the Carinthian state government . After leaving parliament, Mertel became involved as a volunteer and board member for the women's refuge and as the chairwoman of mobile nursing.

Mertel was heavily involved in trade unions and from 1975 a member of the regional executive committee of the public service union (GÖD) in Carinthia. From 1983 she was also a member of the state executive of the ÖGB Carinthia and from 1984 district women chairwoman of the ÖGB Klagenfurt. In 1989 she was elected regional women chairwoman of the ÖGB and was a member of the GÖD federal board. In September 2007 Mertel resigned from her position as chairwoman of the ÖGB regional women.

In the SPÖ, Mertel was a member of the state women's committee in Carinthia and a member of the state party executive. In 1994 she was elected to the SPÖ federal party executive and between 2000 and 2002 she was the representative of the Austrian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

Mertel represented the SPÖ in the National Council between November 5, 1990 and December 19, 2002. Between 1992 and 2002 she was the family spokeswoman for the SPÖ and between 1994 and 2002 she was deputy chairwoman of the SPÖ parliamentary club. After the National Council election in 2002 , Mertel lost her mandate due to postponements after the voting cards were counted.
