The Ilsetal is located in the northern part of the Harz Mountains . From the national park town of Ilsenburg am Harzfuß up to the headwaters of the Ilse - near the summit of the Brocken ( 1141.2  m above sea  level ) - various forest communities of the Harz extend. Heinrich Heine described the Ilse valley with its river Ilse and the Ilsestein enthroned above it in today's Harz National Park .

The Ilse Falls near Ilsenburg

If you approach the Harz on the northern edge, you will notice its striking mountains. Between Goslar and Wernigerode , its mountains are particularly impressive when steep peaks grow out of the flat valley. In the Harz Mountains, very deep gorge valleys mark the landscape between the mountains. In addition to the Ilse, the parallel valleys of the Oker , Ecker and Bode should also be mentioned here.

From 1830 to 1838, at the expense of Count Henrich zu Stolberg-Wernigerode, a road from Ilsenburg via Spiegelslust through the Ilsetal, below the Brocken to Schierke, was built, which at that time made tourism in the higher mountain regions much easier, but is now closed to public transport is.

Via the Heinrich-Heine-Weg and the Plessenburg you can climb the Brocken from Ilsenburg ( 250  m height) for 15 km.

At or near the Ilsetal there are these stamping points of the Harzer hiking needle (viewed downstream; with stamping point numbers): Gelber Brink (22), Große Zeterklippe (10), Brockenhaus (9), Stempelsbuche (8), Bremer Hütte  / Obere Ilsefälle ( 6), Gasthaus Ilsestein (30) and Froschfelsen (5).
