In the game of waves is the title of the bronze sculpture of the fountain on the market in Bad Schwartau, designed as a fountain .

The sculpture was a gift from the sculptor Paul Peterich to his place of birth. The original sculpture was melted down during the Second World War in 1943 as part of the non-ferrous metal collection and the stone plinth was cleared away after the war.

Today's fountain is a replica based on historical photographs by the artist Josef Andrey Wieczorek.

The total cost of the replica was DM 750,000.

presentation

The Art Nouveau - plastic displays Triton , the son of the sea god Poseidon and the Mediterranean nymph Nereid before her abduction in the water kingdom. It ties in with the series of triton fountains .

Triton is depicted as a chimera of man, fish ( dolphin ) and horse with fins instead of hooves, who leans backwards to kiss the nereid who also rides backwards on him and embraces his head. He is holding a seahorse as a modification of his attribute , the twisted sea shell, in the hand of his outstretched right arm.

The entirety of the sculpture is determined by the curved, harmoniously merging forms.

History and regeneration

The sculpture was created in Rastede between 1905 and 1907 . In 1910, already destined for Schwartau, it was exhibited at the art exhibition in the Katharinenkirche in Lübeck , where it received a lot of attention and was judged to be one of the best works by Paul Peterich . 5/6 of the funds of 12,000 marks (richtung) required for the construction of the fountain were raised by the Schwartau population.

In 1912, as a gift from Paul Peterich to his hometown , the sculpture was placed on the completed fountain in the market square. The occasion was the 80th birthday of his father Jasper Hinrich Peterich.

During the Second World War , the sculpture was collected as non-ferrous metal in 1943 and melted down in Hamburg at an unspecified point in time. The search for her in 1945 after the end of the war was unsuccessful.

Since the beginning of the 1980s it was the endeavor of the non-profit citizens' association Bad Schwartau to let the sculpture emerge anew. For this purpose, a reconstruction was made in 1986 (today in the Museum of the City of Bad Schwartau ) based on the known photographs and a money collection initiated.

The clients of the reconstruction were: City of Bad Schwartau, citizens' association, Sparkasse Ostholstein under the supervision of the Ministry for Education, Science, Research and Culture, Schleswig-Holstein

In 1997 the plastic was re-cast.

The fountain was inaugurated on August 31, 1997.

The original fountain was demolished in the 1950s.

As part of the reconstruction of the fountain, it was also created based on the model of the original fountain.

The fountain has (with the plastic) a total height of approx. 3.50 m - with a fountain rising from the seahorse. The fountain on which the sculpture is located consists of a round water basin with a diameter of approx. 8 m, in which the sculpture “In the game of the waves” is located on an oval platform approx. 6 m long and approx. 2 m wide of the upper water basin. The water flows from the upper basin via six outlets into a middle basin and from there as a cascade into the lower basin. The upper basin is decorated on the sides with reliefs made of shell limestone - sandstone .
