Iman Rezai

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Iman Rezai ( Persian ایمان رضایی; * 1981 in Shiraz , Iran ) is an Iranian artist who lives and works in Berlin .

Life

Iman Rezai was born in 1981 in Shiraz and lived in Tehran until he was 18 . From 1996 to 1998 he studied at the art school, Tehran (IR), emigrated to Germany in 1998 and has lived in Berlin ever since. Since 2006 he has been studying fine arts at the UdK in Berlin, received a scholarship from the University of the Arts London , Chelsea in 2009 , and another from Musashino Art University in Tokyo in 2010 . From 2011 he studied at the UdK in the class of Leiko Ikemura , which he graduated in 2012 as their master class.

Large-scale collages dominate the painting by the Iranian-German artist. Objects found in his work such as Darth Vader's outfit , plastic bags and children's toys are piled up with remnants of our consumer society. Neon colors are added as painterly details and occasionally the artist drizzles and washes his works. While early works (Professor Baltasar, 2009) seem to contain elements of New York Neo-Expressionism of the 1980s, his most recent collages show an almost installative approach to painting. So there is a trial of new ways of interrelating found objects and color.

The guillotine

“The Guillotine”, 2012, is a collaboration between Iman Rezai and Rouven Materne . Rezai and Materne, both master students of the Japanese artist Leiko Ikemura, built a functional, colorful guillotine and called it online to vote on the life of a sheep. In the period between April 19 and May 17, it was possible to vote on a specially made website whether the sheep should be executed with the guillotine or not. At the end of the vote there were 1,722,900 votes for and 2,819,322 against the execution of the beast. Before the vote was completed, an anonymous American collector bought the guillotine for 2.3 million US dollars .

Cyber war

As part of a controversial art campaign in October 2012, Rezai sent fake emails to various media that allegedly came from the Neue Nationalgalerie . His sender address did not lead to the Berlin Museum, but to the private PR agency The Coup.

In August 2012 the artist started the front company “BundesInvest”, which specializes in the sale of nuclear waste. Under the pseudonym 'Dr. Igor Imanov 'he published press releases announcing the company's IPO and reporting on negotiations to supply Iran.

Waterboarding

In the exhibition “Illusion H2O”, 2012 in Berlin. Rezai invited volunteers to undergo the waterboarding procedure on a torture bench he had created .

I am E-Waste

In June 2017, Rezai started the “I Am E-Waste” campaign to draw attention to residues in the recycling process of electronic waste in industrialized countries. A crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for a film documentation of a repository in Ghana , Africa , was unsuccessful. In an interview with a radio station, the reporter said that the lack of coverage on the subject was due to advertising contracts between media companies and electronics companies.

Others

In the autobiographical novel We Are All Mice , Rezai's brother Ardavan describes their childhood together in Iran.
