The observatory of the Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium in Leinfelden

The Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium (IKG) is one of two high schools in Leinfelden-Echterdingen . It is located in the Leinfelden district.

The school started operations on August 18, 1975 with 386 students in eleven classes. In 1976 a support association was founded. From 1975 to 2000, Senior Studies Director Dietrich Kehr ran the school. He was succeeded in 2001 by senior studies director Stephan Lehle, who managed the school until 2013. As a special feature, Italian is offered as a third foreign language .

Since 2005, the Immanuel-Kant-Gymnasium has offered an open all-day school three days a week and, in addition to a school library and 40 PC workstations, has a small observatory and a climbing wall.

Partnerships

Partnerships exist with the Collège du Mont d'Or and the "Collège Jean Giono" in Manosque, southern France, and the Liceo G. Galilei in Voghera . There are also student exchange programs with Poltava , the Ukrainian twin city and York (Pennsylvania) , the twin city in the USA . The Russian AG also maintained an exchange with the classical grammar school in Saint Petersburg .

Observatory

After a two-year planning and construction phase, the observatory was completed on the roof at the end of 1989. Since then, the observatory has been used by astronomy courses and working groups. But also in the context of project days, the school's own observatory brought the topic of astronomy closer to many students.

Equipment of the observatory

The main instrument of the observatory is a reflecting telescope ( Schmidt-Cassegrain type ) with a diameter of 300 mm and a focal length of 4,000 mm. A Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope is also used as a second instrument (200 mm aperture and 2,000 mm focal length). Finally there is a refractor with a diameter of 90 mm and a focal length of 1,300 mm.

The control of the telescope mount is computer-controlled so that all important celestial objects can be approached precisely.

canteen

Since June 2000, cooking parents have been preparing warm lunches for teachers and students. At first this was only offered on one day a week, now in cooperation with the neighboring Immanuel-Kant-Realschule four days a week in the new cafeteria building, which was occupied in 2006. For this purpose, the non-profit association KANTine LE eV was founded in July 2007 .
