' Immunet' Protect Free is a free, cloud- based, community-controlled antivirus program (uses ClamAV and its own engine ). The software works independently of existing antivirus programs. On January 5, 2011, Immunet was acquired by Sourcefire .

Functionality

The program only requires 10 MB of storage space, is free of charge, describes itself as fast and offers "up-to-date protection" against threats. Virus file signatures are stored in the cloud and not on individual computers, so there is no longer any need to download updates. As soon as a virus is detected and blocked by a user, all Immunet users receive the same updated protection almost at the same time.

Products

Immunet - as offered by Sourcefire - comes in 2 versions:

  • 1. "Immunet Free" (free for commercial and personal use)
  • 2. "Immunet Plus" (commercial paid version)

From version 3.0 "Immunet Free" offers protection based on virus definitions in the cloud and an option to include ClamAV offline virus definitions (for use when you are not connected to the internet). Immunet advises using the free version alongside another antivirus program and supports a number of such programs. These can be carried out next to each other without impairment or resource bottlenecks.

"Immunet Plus" offers additional features such as B. improved offline protection, improved detection and elimination, improved file management protection and email database scanning. "Immunet Plus" does not need another product for complete protection, as it uses the Bitdefender scan engine to also offer conventional protection from an antivirus program.

As of June 10, 2014 "Immunet Plus" is no longer available. If you do not want to do without "Immunet Plus", "Immunet Free" should be used as it is still supported by Cisco for commercial use, advises the Immunet website.

PC magazine

After PC Mag carried out various independent tests, they rated the product (in 2010) as reasonable in its effectiveness. Immunet's virus definitions are stored on servers that are available on the Internet and therefore require less memory and system resources than a conventional antivirus program that has to be installed on a computer. Cloud protection is known for its better protection against and faster detection of threats, but always dependent on an internet connection. PCMag therefore recommends that you always use the free version with an additional anti-virus program.

Chip Online rates version 5 of Immunet as good . The user rating is 4.2 out of a possible 5 stars and the software is 73rd out of 340 in the chip editorial team.

Computer picture

The user reviews on Computer Bild paint a similar picture. There the software gets 4.3 out of 5 stars and lands on the popularity rank 25 out of 63 programs.
