Independence is located in southeast Louisiana. The city covers an area of 5.8 km².
Demographics
According to the 2000 census, 1724 people live in the city. Of these, 60.90% are white, 36.25% African-American, 1.39% Hispanics and Latinos, 0.75% Asians, 0.41% Native Americans and 1.68% can be assigned to one or more ethnic groups.

Arts and Culture
Independence has a large Italian-American community and hosts a large Italian festival every April. In the early 19th century, Italians first settled in the region of today's Independence, giving the city the nickname Little Italy. The Center for Cultural Studies at Southeastern Louisiana University and the Tourist Information Center at Tangipahoa Parish are also located in Independence.
