The Independence is a liquid gas tanker built in 2014 that serves as an import terminal in Klaipeda.

history

In 2007 the Seimas (the Lithuanian Parliament) decided that a liquid gas terminal should be built.

The tanker, built by Hyundai Heavy Industries , was designed as a tank storage vessel with a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU). The ship has a storage capacity of around 170,000  . It will be used as a floating LNG terminal and storage facility in the port of Klaipėda and is intended to make Lithuania more independent of gas supplies from Russia . The project is co-financed by the European Investment Bank .

The ship ordered in 2011 was built in 2013/2014. The keel was laid on January 21st, the launch on May 3rd, 2013. It was completed on May 12, 2014. The ship reached its port of destination on October 27, 2014.

Technical specifications

The ship is equipped with a diesel-electric drive . For electricity generation are four of Wärtsilä - diesel driven generators. The emergency power supply is ensured by a generator driven by a Cummins diesel engine.

The ship has four cargo tanks. Tank 1 holds 26,510 m³, tanks 2 to 4 each have a capacity of 46,873 m³ (with 98% use). A maximum of 9000 m³ / hour can be loaded, and a maximum of 5000 m³ / hour deleted.
