Independence Day - Kosovo on the way to independence is a documentary film by the Swiss directors Juerg Hostettler and Georg Häsler from 2009 .

action

On February 17, 2008 Kosovo declared its independence. During their filming since Independence Day, the two authors experienced how conditions gradually relax despite geopolitical gimmicks by the USA and Russia. There has been no mass exodus of the minorities, the majority of Kosovar Albanians want proximity to Western Europe instead of nationalistic exaggeration of the past.

In the film, people from the southwest of Kosovo in particular have their say: Albanians, Serbs and a Turkish master hairdresser, who reminds us that a hundred years ago the Ottomans ruled the Balkans. Swiss diplomats and the military also comment on developments. Switzerland is heavily involved in the international community in Kosovo and has taken a surprisingly clear position in favor of independence.

production

The freelance director Juerg Hostettler from Erlenbach traveled to Prizren in February 2008 with Georg Häsler from Bern to shoot a documentary about Kosovo's path to independence from Serbia. The decision in favor of the film was made spontaneously, and both of them financed the trip themselves, as various foundations refused to provide financial support for the film project. Hostettler and Häsler traveled to Kosovo seven times during the shooting. Both received support from the Swisscoy troops stationed in Kosovo . In total, the production costs amounted to around 150,000 Swiss francs .

Independence Day had its television premiere on February 16, 2009 on 3sat .
