The Indian River is the widest river in Dominica . It runs in Parish St. John and flows into the Caribbean Sea on the west coast in Prince Rupert Bay (Portsmouth Bay) .

The Indian River rises about 600 m above sea level ( ⊙ ) on the north slope of Morne Turner , on the border to Parish St. Andrew , while the source streams of one of its main tributaries, the Maikay River, all come from the east from the Parish St. Andrew come here. The source streams initially run north through Brandy Estate and Beauséjour , where the Maikay River flows, and then turns more strongly to the northwest. In the north of Cantarde it receives tributaries that come on the one hand from the center of the island, from Grand Bois and on the other hand from the area of Borne and the southern flank of the Morne Destinée ( ⊙ ). From this confluence, it finally turns west and flows in a winding course to the west. At Newood he has already reached the lowlands. From left and south it receives several small tributaries that come from Brandy Estate and from the mountains of Morne Balvine in the south. It passes the Sugar Loaf Estate in the south of Portsmouth and afterwards it forms a swamp area and a wide course on the coast, where the Barry River flows to it from the right and north from the mountains around Morne Les Héritiers and Morne Brulés ( ⊙ ). It flows into the Caribbean Sea between the center of Portsmouth (Zicack) in the north and Glanvilia in the south. The catchment area of the Picard River borders to the south , while the tributaries of the Blenheim River have their catchment area to the east and northeast . The Granby Street Portsmouth, which in the extension as a connection to Thibaud serves Parish of St. Andrew on the east coast follows the lower reaches of the river to the Dos d'Ane (donkey). Scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean 2 were filmed on the navigable part of the river. There are offers for tourists to take boat tours on the river.
