The industrial heating power plant (IHKW) Andernach is a substitute fuel power plant based on substitute fuel (RDF) for waste incineration with additional natural gas- fired combustion boilers to cover peak loads . The plant is operated by EEW Energy from Waste Helmstedt GmbH in Helmstedt , Lower Saxony . In the IHKW Andernach up to 140,000 tons of substitute fuels, as well as up to 8,000 tons of waste rolling oil and a maximum of 7,500 tons of sewage sludge from the production of ThyssenKrupp Rasselstein are burned annually .

The energy obtained in this way, in the form of process and heating steam as well as electricity, supplies the industrial cogeneration plant year-round and exclusively to the tinplate plant of ThyssenKrupp Rasselstein GmbH in Andernach .

Every week several thousand tons of RDF are transported to the IHKW Andernach and stored there in the RDF bunker. There is always a slight negative pressure in the EBS bunker so that no odors can escape. In the further processing process, the prepared RDF reaches the combustion grate via the feed hopper. The fire has a temperature of more than 1,000 ° C. This thermal energy is used to generate around 65 tons of steam per hour in the evaporation pipes of the RDF boiler. This reaches the steam turbine with a downstream generator. There the steam drives the turbine at a pressure of 68  bar and a maximum temperature of 523 ° C. The electrical energy obtained in this way is fed into the ThyssenKrupp Rasselstein GmbH network.

The operation of the IHKW Andernach replaces around 46 million liters of heating oil for energy production every year.
