Inga Markovits

Inga Markovits (born June 25, 1937 in Germany as Inga Schulthes) is an American law scholar and university professor of German origin. She holds The Friends of Joe Jamail Regents Chair at the University of Texas at Austin .

Life

Markovits received her doctorate in 1969 from the Free University of Berlin on civil law in the German Democratic Republic before emigrating to the USA . In 1989/1990 she traveled to East Berlin and Wismar , among others , in order to investigate judicial practice and the mentality of judges and lawyers in the GDR in numerous discussions and file studies. She published her results in two books: The settlement (about the end of the GDR justice system in the last few weeks before reunification) and Justice in Lüritz (about the Wismar district court , which is pseudonymised in the book under the name "Lüritz").

Markovits received the Ellen Maria Gorrisen Berlin Prize of the American Academy in Berlin in 2012 and is a fellow of this academy.
