Harald Ingholt

Harald Ingholt (born March 11, 1896 in Copenhagen , † October 28, 1985 in Hamden, Connecticut ) was a Danish archaeologist from the Near East .

Life

After attending Østre Borgerdyd Gymnasium in Copenhagen, Ingholt studied at the University of Copenhagen from 1914 , where he received the title of cand. Theol in 1922. and in 1928 with a thesis on the sculpture of Palmyra as Dr. phil. received his doctorate.

In 1922 he was a fellow at Princeton University , studied in Paris in 1923 and was a fellow at the American School of Oriental Research in Jerusalem from 1924 to 1925 . In 1924, 1925 and 1928 he took part in excavations in Palmyra. From 1925 to 1930 he worked at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek , and from 1927 to 1930 he was also secretary of the Ny Carlsbergfondet . From 1931 to 1938 he was professor of archeology at the American University of Beirut and headed its archaeological museum. During this time he also directed the Danish excavations in Hama . From 1939 to 1941 he taught Hebrew and the Old Testament at Aarhus University . In 1942 he was Lecturer in Classics at Yale University , in 1944 Lecturer in Classics and Biblical Exegesis , from 1946 to 1960 he was Associate Professor of Classics and Biblical Exegesis , from 1960 to his retirement in 1964 Professor of Archeology .

His main areas of research were the arts of Palmyra, the Parthians and Gandhara .
