He worked with Rolleiflex cameras from the 1950s and 60s. A formal characteristic of his pictures is the development of the silver gelatine prints with a natural sponge, which makes the chemical process of photography visible and makes each hand print unique. In 1995 he colored the first b / w prints. Since 2007 the hand coloring of individual works has systematically found its way into his work. These analogue hand-colored photo works were created as pigment prints after scanning.

"The entire complex of Ingolf Timpner's works shows that photography is able to take up, meet and even replace the demands of painting."

His photographic works combine staging and quotations. "
