Ingrid Vang Nyman (born August 21, 1916 in Vejen , Jutland , † December 13, 1959 in Copenhagen ) was a Swedish book illustrator who u. a. the original edition, published in 1945, was designed by Astrid Lindgren's Pippi Longstocking . She is known for her idiosyncratic style that was way ahead of her time.

life and work

At the age of nineteen Nyman began studying at the Art Academy in Copenhagen , which she dropped out after a few years to work as a freelance artist. In 1940 she married the artist and poet Arne Nyman and their son was born that same year. The marriage ended in divorce after a few years and Nyman moved to Stockholm with her son in 1943 .

Her most productive time began until 1952, when she also illustrated Astrid Lindgren's Pippi Longstocking , the collection of stories Sammelaugust and other children and we children from Bullerbü . Nyman demanded the same artistic quality from illustrations for children as from those for adults. Due to psychological and health problems, she repeatedly withdrew to live with relatives in Denmark for long periods of time. Her condition worsened rapidly and so Nyman finally committed suicide on Lucia Festival 1959 suicide .
