Inhalatory

The inhalatorium is a listed building in Baden in the canton of Aargau . It is located on the Limmat promenade in the bathing quarter , between the Hotel Limmathof and the Leaning bridge . The building is a cultural asset of regional importance .

building

The elongated, single-storey building in a strictly classicist style stands directly on the banks of the Limmat and connects to the adjacent Limmathof. Tuscan pilasters made of sandstone divide the approximately 50 meter long structure into 13 axes with simple rectangular windows. The central axis is marked by a bundle of pillars and, together with a transverse gable, forms an accentuated central projection . A slightly protruding row of arches on the river side originates from the substructure of the former drinking arbor.

Inside the building there are two stone memorial plaques. They remember the donors of the Badarmenfonds founded in 1754 by Landvogt Franz Ludwig von Graffenried, with which the material and medical care of needy bathers should be ensured. They were designed in the forms of romantic classicism, the older of the two panels comes from Joseph Caspar Jeuch .

history

In 1834, the canton of Aargau ceded its share of the Limmat spring five years earlier to the city of Baden. This then undertook to build a poor bathing house and an arbor for drinking cures . The latter was built in 1835/36 according to plans by Johann Jakob Heimlicher and had 17 axles. In 1851 and 1853 ten bathrooms were set up in the basement . In 1910 Otto Bölsterli completely converted the drinking arbor into what is now the inhalatorium, while maintaining the volume of the building. This enabled the then novel inhalation therapy to be offered in Baden as well. In 1967 the building was placed under a preservation order, and in 1987 the swimming pool was closed. A comprehensive renovation took place between 1990 and 1992. The northern part has since housed the spa archive and an information center, the southern part a family doctor's practice.
