Crossing over Cooper Creek in the Strzelecki Desert

Innamincka is a small settlement in the northeast of the Australian state of South Australia . It is located 1065 kilometers northeast of Adelaide on the banks of Cooper Creek , within the Innamincka Regional Reserve and is surrounded by the Strzelecki Desert , Tirari Desert and Sturts Stony Desert . It can be reached from Lyndhurst via the Strzelecki Track .

history

Traditionally, this area is home to the Yandruwandha , Dieri and Yarrawarrka Aboriginal tribes . Charles Sturt was the first European to come to the area in 1845, followed by Augustus Gregory , Robert O'Hara Burke and William John Wills in 1858 . The latter died of exhaustion and lack of water on Cooper Creek; A memorial was erected in Innamincka in 1944 to commemorate her.

Innamincka was originally called Hopetown ; In 1890 it was appointed town. Although never very large, Innamincka owned a hotel, shop, and police station that also collected customs duties on cattle brought from Queensland to South Australia . In 1928 the Australian Inland Mission (as part of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia ) established a hospital, the Elizabeth Symon Nursing Home . As a result of a severe drought and because of its isolation, the hotel, hospital and police station were closed again in 1951 and the city abandoned.

Increased tourism and the discovery of gas and oil deposits led to the founding of Cooper Creek Hotel Motel Pty Ltd in the late 1960s , which initially opened a hotel and a shop. In 1994 the Elizabeth Symon Nursing Home was restored and now serves as the information center for the Innamincka Regional Reserve .
