The inner-city parish church (officially Church of Our Lady , Hungarian Nagyboldogasszony Főplébánia, Belvárosi plébániatemplom ) in the Hungarian capital Budapest is a Roman Catholic church and at the same time the oldest church in the country. It is located in the Pest district in the Belváros-Lipótváros district (5th district). Located in the center of the city, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Danube bank since 1987 .

history

When exactly the church was built is unclear, but in 1046 Bishop Gellért was already buried here. In the 14th century the church was rebuilt in Gothic style with the support of King Sigismund of Luxembourg and two more aisles were added during the reign of King Matthias Corvinus .

During the Turkish occupation it was used as a mosque ; A mihrab (prayer niche) in the south-eastern wall of the choir testifies to this . After a major fire in 1723, the building was restored in the Baroque style between 1725 and 1739 under the direction of the architect János György Pauer (1692–1752) . After that, the church was restored several times: between 1805 and 1808 (under the direction of János Hild ), in 1889 ( Imre Steindl ), after 1945 ( László Gerő ) and finally in 2011 ( Tamás Mezős ).

In 2010 a fresco from the so-called Anjou period (beginning of the 14th century) was found in the niche behind the choir , which depicts the Virgin Mary on the throne and is remarkably well preserved.

According to Hungarian legend, the church had to be moved when the Elisabeth Bridge was built because it was in the way. However, this is not true: Though they thought about moving it, in the end the bridge was moved right next to the church building, as can also be seen today.

In the church there is a relic of Saint Gellért since March 2002 and since 2006 relics of King Ladislaus I (Hungary) and Elisabeth of Thuringia , who celebrated her engagement here in 1211.

Franz Liszt and sometimes Richard Wagner often played on the church organ when he visited the Hungarian composer and father-in-law at the same time.
