The Inshore Race Weekend is a sailing event that is organized annually for the Kiel Harbor Festival at the beginning of September by the Academic Sailing Association in Kiel .

In contrast to similar races, the Race Weekend does not take place far from the city, but in the inner fjord of Kiel and can thus be watched by around 200,000 spectators.

Classes

In addition to ship classes such as the International14 (14footer), the International Moth Class or the large 18footer skiffs , all other dinghies , skiffs or open keel boats can participate, including Contender , 49er , 29er , SZ dinghy , Seggerling , Formula18-Cats , Hobie 16 , Laser , Pirate , Dyas , Monarch or Trias .

In addition, special ship types are invited every year, most recently the J / 80s, J / 24s and Melges 24 classes.

The regattas

In 2006, the IRW organized the open North German championships for the International14s and International Moths classes. Both classes of dinghies belong to the regular classes of the regatta and are represented with large fields every year.

There is also the yardstick rating , open to all other classes. If there are 4 or more boats in a class, there is a separate evaluation, if there are 8 or more boats there is a separate start.

The regattas are divided into two rating systems. On Saturday the traditional attempt is made to drive 8 so-called up-and-down races, followed on Sunday by a long-distance race through the Kiel Fjord.
