The Institute for Limnology , also the Research Institute for Limnology (ILIM) is a research facility of the University of Innsbruck , which took over the institute from the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna in 2012 .

Since 1981, the Austrian Academy of Sciences has been running the Institute for Limnology at Mondsee in Upper Austria as the supporting organization for 65 research institutions . Biodiversity and ecosystem research in the aquatic area are the focus of the 13 permanent scientists who are involved in numerous research projects with international partners.

Important findings in the field of microbial ecology, algae and climate research as well as zooplankton and fish ecology in lakes can be traced back to research projects of the research institute in Mondsee . In addition, the Institute of Limnology has been collecting data on the climate development of waters in the Alpine region for more than a decade , which can be used as a basis for models on global warming . The institute is the seat of international training programs (IPGL, International Training Programs in Limnology), within the framework of which more than 1100 students from 70 countries have already completed their training. The scientific staff teach at the universities of Vienna , Salzburg and Innsbruck and train diploma and doctoral students. Thanks to the international activities of the institute for around 30 years, a worldwide network of water experts has been established.
