The Institute for Molecular Biology (IMB) is a research facility of the Federal Republic of Germany, which is part of the legally independent higher federal authority Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI) on the island of Riems . The FLI also bears the additional designation of the Federal Research Institute for Animal Health. The institute primarily conducts departmental research for the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV). The research activities of the IMB are in the field of veterinary medicine and molecular biology .

history

The Institute for Molecular Biology is one of four research institutions on the island of Riems, whose history goes back to the virologist Friedrich Loeffler (1852–1915) and in 1910. The institute was re-established in its current form in 1992.

  • A detailed chronology of the institutes on the island of Riems is shown in the section "History" in the article Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut .

research

The molecular biology research of the institute is mainly concerned with investigations into the genome structure and gene regulation as well as the functional characterization of viral gene products , whereby their role in the pathogenesis and the immune response is examined in particular . The results of this work provide the basis for the genetic engineering development of vaccines and diagnostic procedures.

Here, the institute deals with the characterization and molecular analysis of animal pathogenic virus , with priority animale herpesviruses (pseudorabies virus, bovine herpesvirus 1 , virus of infectious laryngotracheitis ) birnaviruses (infectious bursal disease of chicken, infectious pancreatic necrosis of salmonids , spring viraemia of carp ), rhabdovirus ( Viral hemorrhagic septicemia , infectious hematopoietic necrosis of salmonids), orthomyxoviruses ( avian influenza ) and paramyxoviruses ( Newcastle disease virus) are processed.

The institute attaches great importance to publishing its research results and thus informing the population about dangers. For example, there is an area on the FLI website that provides information on current disease events. In addition to press releases, this also includes detailed and official status reports and risk assessments .
