The Institute for New Testament Text Research ( INTF ) is part of the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster and focuses on research into the text history of the New Testament . It reconstructs the original Greek text on the basis of the entire handwritten tradition, the early translations and patristic quotations.

The INTF publishes editions and aids, including the manual editions Novum Testamentum Graece and Greek New Testament as well as the Editio Critica Maior . It is supported in its work by the Hermann Art Foundation for the promotion of New Testament text research . The results of this work are made available to a wider audience in the institute's own Bible Museum.

history

The Institute for New Testament Text Research was founded in 1959 in Münster by Kurt Aland (1915–1994). Aland had already worked on the Novum Testamentum Graece by Eberhard Nestle and Erwin Nestle since the 1950s . This manual edition was then further revised and edited in the INTF. Under the name Nestle-Aland , it became the institute's trademark. In 1966, the Greek New Testament, intended for translators, was added as a second hand edition, which is now distributed under the umbrella of UBS. A new text reconstruction, in which the great papyrus finds of the 20th century were of particular importance, was carried out in the 26th edition of Nestle-Aland in 1979 and in the third edition of the Greek New Testament in 1975. Both editions have been textually identical since then, but offer different text-critical apparatus .

The main goal of the institute is the so-called Editio Critica Maior, which is based on the entire tradition of the New Testament in Greek manuscripts, old translations and New Testament quotations in ancient Christian literature. The prerequisite for the realization of this task was the inspection and evaluation of the entire handwritten tradition of the Greek New Testament. Under the direction of Kurt Aland, in preparation for the Editio Critica Maior, the most complete possible collection of the material (partly on extensive manuscript journeys) in the form of microfilms and photographs and its evaluation in individual editions and special studies took place.

Kurt Aland found a friend and sponsor in Bishop Hermann Kunst . The foundation he set up in 1964, since 1977 “ Hermann Art Foundation for the Promotion of New Testament Text Research ”, has provided the institute with crucial financial support ever since.

In 1979 Kurt Aland founded the Münster Bible Museum , which also presents the work of the institute to a broader public.

In 1983 Barbara Aland followed her husband in the institute's management until 2004. Under her aegis, the evaluation of the material was continued and made available to science in many publications. 1997 saw the first delivery of the Editio Critica Maior with the letter of James.

Holger Strutwolf has headed the Institute and the Bible Museum since October 2004 .

In 2007 the Editio Critica Maior project was included in the program of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts . In the following year the “Novum Testamentum Graecum - Editio Critica Maior” office was set up at the University of Münster.

Projects

Editio Critica Maior

The main objective of the institute is the Editio Critica Maior of the Greek New Testament, which for the first time is based on the entire material of the extant Greek manuscripts, the old translations and the New Testament quotations in ancient Christian literature. In 1997 the first delivery of the Editio Critica Maior appeared with the Letter of James , in 2013 the volume with the Catholic Letters in the 2nd edition. The Editio Critica Maior project is funded by the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts as a long-term project.

Nestle-Aland and Greek New Testament

Since the 1960s, the institute has published the two authoritative hand editions of the Greek text of the New Testament, the so-called Nestle-Aland (the previous editors were Erwin and Eberhard Nestle ) and the Greek New Testament. The 26th edition of Nestle-Alands takes into account the new papyrus finds of the 20th century. The 28th edition (2012) is also published in electronic form on CD-ROM. A prototype was temporarily accessible online beforehand.

New Testament Transcripts

In the New Testament Transcripts database , parallel and in preparation for the completion of the electronic Nestle-Aland, the entire text of the New Testament can be traced with regard to the occurrences and deviations of the word stock in the existing manuscripts.

New Testament Virtual Manuscript Room

The INTF provides the New Testament Virtual Manuscript Room (NT.VMR) as an electronic text-critical aid , a virtual manuscript reading room in which New Testament manuscripts can be viewed online. Structure of the data models, design of the website and programming were carried out by Martin Faßnacht and Ulrich Schmid. Digitized manuscripts can be displayed individually in the VMR in facsimile and, if available, in transcript.

Manuscript list

The official condensed list of the Greek manuscripts of the New Testament published by Kurt Aland is publicly available. It continues the method of counting the manuscripts introduced by Caspar René Gregory with the help of the Gregory-Aland numbers (GA number). This records all New Testament manuscripts known around the world and assigns previously unknown manuscripts new GA numbers or assigns fragments to known manuscripts, and shows important codes in each case; u. a. are mentioned: the century of origin, content, format, owner or library and the exact signature of the manuscript. Throughout research, these numbers are used consistently to uniquely identify manuscripts.

Manuscripts

The INTF preserves the following manuscripts:

Minus muscles 676, 798, 1432, 2444, 2445, 2446, 2460, 2754, 2755, 2756, 2793; Lectionaries 1681 , 1682 , 1683 , 1684 (lower font Uncial 0233), 1685 , 1686 , 2005 , 2137 , 2208 , and 2276 .
