The Institute for Pharmacy and Molecular Biotechnology ( IPMB ) (until October 1, 2002: Faculty of Pharmacy with the institutes: Pharmaceutical-Chemical Institute, Institute for Pharmaceutical Biology, Institute for Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy ) deals with the development, investigation and Application of active ingredients and medicinal products as well as the elucidation of molecular and cellular mechanisms of action. It belongs to the Faculty of Biosciences and is a scientific institution of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg .
history
The predecessor of the institute was founded in Karlsruhe in 1946. Due to a resolution of the state parliament in 1970, the Pharmaceutical-Chemical Institute of the University of Karlsruhe was relocated to Heidelberg. Research was resumed there in September 1973. The originally independent pharmaceutical institutes (Pharmaceutical-Chemical Institute, Institute for Pharmaceutical Biology and Institute for Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy) at Heidelberg University were merged in 2002 to form the Institute for Pharmacy and Molecular Biotechnology.
goals and tasks
The IPMB is a teaching and research unit that deals with the development, investigation and application of active ingredients and medicinal products and researches molecular mechanisms of action. This is done using experimental techniques from the fields of chemistry , molecular and cell biology , pharmacology , bioinformatics and pharmaceutical technology . The IPMB is primarily responsible for the presentation of teaching in the courses in Pharmacy and Molecular Biotechnology at Heidelberg University.
The working groups of the IPMB are largely financed by the acquisition of third-party funds for research projects, for example by the German Research Foundation , the Federal Ministry of Education and Research BMBF , the Volkswagen Foundation , the European Union or the pharmaceutical industry.
Structure and direction
The IPMB is represented externally by a managing director, who is elected every two years by the professors of the IPMB.
In 2015 the IPMB comprised the following professorships:
- Roland Eils : Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics
- Gert Fricker : Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy
- Andres Jäschke : bio-organic chemistry
- Christian Klein : Pharmaceutical Chemistry (2012: Managing Director)
- Ulrike Müller : Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics
- Michael Wink : Pharmaceutical Biology
- Stefan Wölfl : Pharmaceutical Biology
Buildings and laboratories
Most of the working groups of the IPMB are located in building INF-364 on the Neuenheimer Feld campus . Some groups are mainly housed in building INF-366 and in the "Bioquant" biological science center.
