Institute for Phytomedicine (Hohenheim)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Institute for Phytomedicine at the University of Hohenheim was founded in 1939 in connection with Bernhard Rademacher's appointment as an Institute for Plant Protection.

From the beginning, both the management and the institute staff dealt with plant diseases and harmful organisms in plants and their control, i.e. protective measures to maintain plant health and maintain the performance of crops.

Herbology was added to the original research areas of phytopathology and entomology in the 1950s . The description of the opportunities and risks of mechanical, thermal, biological and chemical measures for weed and disease control as well as protection against damage to plants are the contents of textbooks as well as more than a thousand diploma theses, dissertations and habilitations. Technology students, agricultural students and doctoral students in training are involved in the development of investigation methods and for the evaluation of the test results.

The Hohenheim Institute played a key role in the discourse on damage thresholds in plant protection and in the development of the concept of integrated plant protection .

With the laboratory building completed in 2011, the institute has the equipment to carry out experiments and research work in phytomedicine. The basis for the phytomedicine training is in the connection with the glass houses, the teaching garden and field trials.
