The Intel 8089 I / O processor is in 8086 / 8088 used -Prozessorsystemen. He serves u. a. as DMA controller and relieves the CPU through further I / O operations. The 8089 provides two I / O channels, each of which offers a transfer rate of 1.25 MByte / s at a standard system frequency of 5 MHz. Since IBM did not use it in the IBM PC , it did not become widely used. Instead, the 8237 was used .

Operating modes

The 8089 can be operated in a local and a remote mode. In local mode , the 8089 works as a slave processor with an 8086/8088 processor that is operated in maximum mode . The remote mode is - similar to the maximum mode of the 8086/8088 - intended for multiprocessor operation. The additional I / O modules, the 8288 (bus controller) and the 8289 (bus arbiter), are used here.

The 8089 does not have an internal oscillator. The required clock is generated externally by the 8284 oscillator chip . Furthermore, a latch is required to separate the addresses from the multiplexed address / data bus , e.g. B. the 8282 . For sufficient control of the entire bus system as well as in multiprocessor operation, bidirectional drivers are required , e.g. B. the 8286 .
