Inter Riviera Maya is a former Mexican football club from Cancun , the center of the Riviera Maya holiday area , after which the club was named.

history

Inter Riviera Maya was the only club that represented the city of Cancun in the Primera División 'A' , as the second Mexican soccer league was called between 1994 and 2009. In addition, Inter was only the second club since the introduction of the second division in the summer of 1950 to bring second division football to Cancun. Previously, only Club Cancun was represented in the second division between 1986 and 1993.

In order to get a starting place for the Apertura 2003 , the newly founded franchise acquired the license of the economically troubled CD Atlético Yucatán , but played an overall disappointing half-season and in the end not only took the last place in its own group, but was also the team the worst record of all 20 second division clubs. In the 2003 Apertura there was only a short period of hope when the only two victories of this half-season (3-0 against Tapatío and 2-1 against Trotamundos Tijuana ) were recorded between the eighth and the tenth match day and thus a “small series of successes “Was put down when the intervening away game at the later relegated Jaguares de Tapachula (0-0) ended without defeat. Inter was already involved in the highest-scoring game of Apertura 2003, which was lost on August 30, 2003 4-7 to Cruz Azul Oaxaca .

The Clausura 2004 was much more successful , which Inter closed with a balanced record (eight wins and losses as well as three draws) and the Liguillas, which were played after the league round, only missed by one point (and the worse goal difference) against the Leones de Morelos .

By far the most successful goalscorer of the team - and one of the most successful in the league - was the Mexican striker Héctor Hernández , who scored a total of 23 goals in the 2003/04 season (9 in the Apertura and 14 in the Clausura). It went together with the second division license, which was used to establish a new franchise at the end of the same season, on the Huracanes de Colima . In turn, these were only represented in the league for one season and then found their way back to Quintana Roo as Águilas Riviera Maya .
