Invierno 1996

With the beginning of the 1996/97 season, the championship in Mexico for the first and second league was changed to the extent that the rounds are played independently of one another and a champion is determined per half season. The first half of the season was initially called Invierno (German winter) and later as Apertura (opening), the second half of the season as Verano (summer) and later as Clausura (closure). However, only one team is promoted per season and in the promotion finals the two champions of the first and second round face each other. If the UANL Tigres wins, as in the 1996/97 season, one team wins both tournaments, it is automatically promoted.

The Tigres won the final of the first round tournament with an aggregate result of 3: 1 (first leg 0: 1, second leg 3: 0) against Atlético Hidalgo.

Invierno 2001

In the finals of the 2001 winter tournament, Veracruz retained the upper hand with an aggregate result of 4-2 (first leg 2-2, second leg 2-0) against San Luis. By acquiring the first division club Irapuato, Veracruz played in the second half of the 2001/02 season in the first division, but also kept a reserve team in the second division, which, however, was often overwhelmed and finished last with only eleven points. This team kept the club - in their capacity as first round champions of the 2001/02 season - but the right to participate in the relegation against Club León after the first division team of CD Veracruz had been transferred to Tuxtla Gutiérrez , to be there henceforth as Jaguares de Chiapas to play.

Clausura 2006

In the finals of the summer tournament, Querétaro prevailed on penalties against Indios Ciudad Juárez, after both teams had previously won their home game 2-1. In the subsequent overall season and promotion finals, the Gallos Blancos then won with an overall result of 5: 1 (first leg 3: 0, second leg 2: 1) against last year's relegated Puebla FC and thus managed to return to the first division after a two-year absence.

Apertura 2006

Before the 2006/07 season, the league was thoroughly reformed. According to the specifications of the Mexican Football Association , every first division club had to maintain a branch team in the second division with immediate effect. For this purpose, the league has been expanded from 20 teams to 24 participants (to provide information on this matter, the following tables are expanded by one column and the respective main club is named). At the same time, the game mode was also changed. Up to now, all teams competed against each other once in a half-season. Now two groups with twelve teams each have been formed. The first eleven games of each half season were played within the same group and the next six games against teams in the other group. Against the same teams they played the matches of the second half of the season, so that they played a home and away game against all opponents over the course of the season, but had no match with six teams from the other group. The four best placed in both groups reached the final round, which was held in a knockout system.

In the finals of the winter tournament 2006, the two season winners Puebla and Petroleros faced each other and drew twice: first 1: 1 in Puebla and then 2: 2 in Salamanca. The penalty shoot-out required to determine the overall winner in the second leg finally decided the Puebla FC 6-5 in his favor.

1 The sporting relegated Monarcas Morelia 1A holds the class through the acquisition of the license of Celaya FC, which most recently served as the farm team of the first division relegated Querétaro FC. As a relegated team, Querétaro no longer needed a branch team in the second division and therefore sold the license of Celaya FC to CA Monarcas Morelia, whose branch team had been relegated and which, according to the FMF statutes, still needed a farm team in the second division.

Apertura 2007

The division into two groups of twelve teams introduced last season was retained in the 2007/08 season. The group affiliation of the teams remained largely in the form as it had been made in the previous season. Ten of the twelve teams in each group found themselves in the same group. Only the team from Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente (Xolos de Tijuana), which was newly formed at the start of the second half of the previous season, and the UANL Tigres B team swapped places. In addition, the vacant place of the promoted Puebla in Group 2 was not replaced by the relegated Querétaro, who was assigned to Group 1, but by the promoted Pachuca Juniors or in reality by the acquirer of their second division license, Jaguares de Tapachula. Querétaro replaced his former farm team Celaya FC in Group 1, which had been sold to rescue the relegated Monarcas Morelia 1A, who was also assigned to Group 1.

The sale of the Celaya FC farm team by Querétaro FC was not the only change in this regard during the summer break. The newly promoted Puebla FC now needed a branch team according to the requirements of the FMF and found it in the city rivals Lobos BUAP. The Jaguares de Chiapas formed their own branch team with the Jaguares de Tapachula and ended the cooperation with the Petroleros de Salamanca, who became the new farm team of San Luis after its cooperation with Tampico-Madero FC had ended. After separating from Colima, Atlante found a new partner in León.

With an impressive overall win of 7: 0 (first leg 3: 0, second leg 4: 0), the Indios prevailed against the Dorados in the finals of the 2007 winter tournament.

In the subsequent overall season finale, the first round champions Indios prevailed against León with the same overall result (first leg 1-0, second leg 2-2) and thus made their first promotion to the top division.

Apertura 2008

For the 2008/09 season, profound changes were made to the league structure. The number of participants was increased to 27 and the teams were divided into three groups of nine teams each. Within the groups, each team played twice against each other team, once at home and once away. There was no contact with the teams in the other group during the league round. The two best placed and the two thirds in the group with the most points qualified for the final round, which was played in the knockout system.

In the final of the Apertura 2008 Querétaro prevailed 0-0 and 2-0 against Irapuato.

In the promotion finals, the first round champions Querétaro (after 2-1 and 0-1) retained the upper hand with 5: 4 on penalties against Mérida and thus managed to return to the first division.

The promotion final second leg in the Estadio Carlos Iturralde Rivero of Mérida was after 15 years of existence also the last game of the Primera División 'A', which was converted to the Liga de Ascenso and restructured from the following season .
