International Brotherhood of Magicians (IBM) is a world association for professional and amateur magicians. It is headquartered in St. Louis , Missouri, USA .

The organization belongs to the international umbrella organization Fédération Internationale des Sociétés Magiques .

history

The association was founded in 1922 by Len Vintus (1903-1999, real name Melvin Justus Given McMullen), Gene Gordon (1903-1994, real name Gordon Eugene Avery) and Don Rogers (1900-19971, real name Ernest Schieldge) in Winnipeg in the in the Canadian province of Manitoba and, according to its own information, is the world's largest association of magicians with around 12,000 members. A monthly magazine, The Linking Ring, is published for members. The IBM Convention takes place once a year in the middle of the year.

The association comprises around 300 regional associations, which are referred to as "rings" and are grouped into over 80 regional associations. There is a "TVP" ( Territorial Vice President ) in each regional association . In order to found a ring, you have to prove 10 guarantors who already belong to the IBM.

In Germany

In Germany there are two active rings: Ring 285 in Backnang and Ring 348 in Röthenbach an der Pegnitz .

In Austria

In Austria there is an active ring in Vienna (No. 240), which was founded in 1973 by "Fenni" Hans Schwabe, Willi Baumgartner, Fritz Lisetti and Tony Rei . Over the years, it developed into one of the leading magic associations in Austria. The club evenings take place all year round every first and third Tuesday of the month in the Kalanag Salon of Café Zartl (named after the famous magician Kalanag ). During the monthly guest evenings in the Kalanagsalon, closeup shows of the artists are offered.

In Switzerland

Ring 207 in Lausanne is the only active ring in Switzerland.

Honors

The International Brotherhood of Magicians presents the Order of Merlin Award . Active IBM members can receive one of four levels based on their active membership time:

  • Order of Merlin Award: Inductees (for 25 years)
  • Order of Merlin Award: Shield (for 35 years)
  • Order of Merlin Award: Excalibur (for 50 years)
  • Order of Merlin Award: Excelsior (for 60 years)
