The International Business School of Service Management (ISS) is an education and consulting company based in Hamburg . From 2007 to 2014, the ISS was a state-recognized private university of applied sciences , which was the first institution in Germany to offer FIBAA-accredited in- service training for a Master of Business Administration or Bachelor in service management . From 2010 onwards, a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in business administration with a focus on service management could be completed. In November 2013, teaching was stopped due to insufficient student numbers.

The ISS continues to offer certificate courses, seminars and training courses for professional development, organizes workshops and specialist conferences and provides consulting services for companies and organizations.

history

The ISS International Business School of Service Management is a spin-off of the MarketingAkademie Hamburg , a consulting and training service provider for commercial enterprises. In connection with the economic importance of services in the service society and their scientific treatment in the emerging field of service science, the university's study program should create a corresponding academic training program for managers in this area. The ISS went out at the Marketing Academy Hamburg built power range Service Academy forth, under which open seminars as well as German and English training courses in the field of service management offered. Specialists and executives from the field of technical services / maintenance of technical devices were able to train themselves here in part-time courses such as “Project Manager Service”, “Logistics Manager Service”, “Service Manager” and “Specialist Service”. The company contacts of the MarketingAkademie were used for the construction and expansion of the ISS, as well as the premises of the training service provider on Hans-Henny-Jahnn-Weg in Hamburg-Uhlenhorst .

Exterior view of the ISS

In 2005, the sponsoring company of the university was registered as the founding company for the establishment of the ISS International Business School of Service Management GmbH and, after completion of the founding process, renamed the ISS International Business School of Service Management GmbH in 2006 . In 2006, the ISS applied for state recognition, which was granted on February 13, 2007. The founding president was Klaus W. Röben, Michael René Weber acted as managing director.

State-recognized university of applied sciences from 2007 to 2013

The Service Management MBA program started on January 4, 2008; From 2009, the maintenance specialization was offered for the course. As part of the “Top Executive Program” (TEP) mentoring program, representatives of the business world made themselves available as mentors for the MBA students. The ISS worked together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics ( IML ) and the Forum Vision Maintenance eV , an interest group of managers in the field of industrial maintenance, to profile the course, which specializes in service and maintenance management in the industrial sector .

On June 26, 2010, the first students of the bachelor's degree with a focus on service and maintenance management began their studies at the ISS. In the same year, the ServiceAkademie of the MarketingAkademie Hamburg mentioned above , in which non-academic extra-occupational training courses were offered, was organizationally assigned to the ISS.

As of 2011, two additional MA programs (Master of Arts) specializing in International Marketing, Sales and Relationship Management and International Management and Service Operations were also accredited.

From summer 2012 a study visit to the Institute of Management Technology in Ghaziabad, India was part of the MBA study program. Also in 2012 began a cooperation with the Viennese study center Hohe Warte , within the framework of which the ISS in Vienna offered the BA course "Management and Service Competence".

In cooperation with the vocational school H20 Bramfelder See , from March 2013 ISS and H20 jointly developed a double-qualifying vocational study program at the University of Applied Sciences, in which commercial vocational training was completed in parallel to the BA course in service management.

In December 2013, the management of the ISS decided to discontinue the master’s and bachelor’s courses in view of the low number of students and not to apply for the renewal of state recognition as a university of applied sciences due in summer 2014.

Training and advisory institute from 2014

After the university was closed, the ISS continued its activities as a provider of further training events and consulting services. International Services and Solutions GmbH has been the supporting company since then .

Structure of the university

The founding president Klaus W. Röben was succeeded as presidents of the ISS by professors Andreas Winkler and Odd Gisholt. Odd Gisholt held the office until the university closed. The university senate consisted of the university management, teaching staff and students. Managing Director and Chancellor Michael René Weber was responsible for the day-to-day business and administration of teaching. Together with the president, he was in charge of the university administration. The ISS's own "ISM International Institute of Service Management" bundled the university's research activities.

The Scientific Advisory Board advised the university management on teaching and research activities at the ISS Hamburg and their practical relevance. In addition to two professors from other universities, the committee also included two executives from the field of service management. Companies and associations that supported the ISS were represented on the Economic and Funding Advisory Board.

Degree programs and specializations

The ISS Hamburg offered a business degree with a focus on service management. The bachelor's degree could be completed part-time (study duration eight semesters including practical project) with face-to-face and self- study phases as well as a dual study with parallel training in a company (study duration six semesters).

The MBA program, initially part-time and later also available as a dual degree (study duration four or six semesters), was held entirely in English, followed the blended learning approach and was also carried out in face-to-face and self-study phases. Some of the presence blocks were held at external cooperation partners or at the teaching facilities by visiting professors, for example at the Dublin Business School , the University of Karlstad , the Dortmund Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics and the Institute of Management Technology in Ghaziabad .

The master's programs “International Marketing, Sales and Relationship Management” and “International Service and Operations Management” were designed to run for 32 months or 24 months on a part-time basis.

Further training offers and services

The ISS continued its work as a training service provider even after the university closed its doors. Certificate courses, open seminars and company-specific training programs (“corporate programs”) designed according to company requirements in German and English are offered, as well as consulting services for companies and organizations. The thematic focus of the teaching and advisory services is on the analysis, conception, implementation, marketing and management of service offerings as well as on coping with transformation processes ( digital change , servitization ) in this area.

The specialist conferences and workshops organized by the ISS include regular events for the Spectaris industry association and the TrendWorkshop Service that takes place annually in Hamburg .

In September 2009, the first research publication was published with the study "Future Service Management". From 2008 to 2014 the ISS and the research institute ISM associated with the ISS took part in various joint research projects and studies that were funded by the federal ministries BMBF and BMWi and focused on service topics. ISS employees were also involved in numerous scientific publications, among other things on the modeling of business processes in the service area and servitization.
