The International Association of the Katharinaten is an international association of believers in the Roman Catholic Church . It was founded in Siena in 1970 and was recognized by the Holy See in 1992 . The association has approximately 3,000 registered members in four countries.

history

On October 4, 1970, Pope Paul VI raised (1963–1978) received St. Catherine of Siena as Doctor of the Church with the apostolic letter Mirabilis in Ecclesia Deus . On the same day, the then Archbishop of Siena , Ismaele Mario Castellano  OP, founded the International Union of the Katharinaten and thus continued the brotherhood of St. Catherine of Fontebranda (also Catherine of Siena), which had existed since 1462. The naming "Katharinaten" refers to this brotherhood, whose members were so named.

On August 15, 1992, the Association received the letter of recognition from the Pontifical Council for the Laity and is included in the official register as an international organization of believers under papal law .

Self-image

Based on the members of the Dominican lay communities , this association is shaped in its principles by the ideas of the Dominicans . They consider their goals to be to call on Christians to deepen their spiritual life and to shape their lives in love for Christ . After Pope John Paul II raised St. Catherine of Siena as co-patroness of Europe on October 1, 1999, the self-image of the spiritual unity of Europe was complemented. In the foreground of all spiritual and social activities is the dissemination of the works of St. Catherine. On this occasion, the Association organizes prayer hours, cultural events, congresses, conferences and spiritual readings.

Organization and expansion

The organization is run by the Dominicans. The head office is located in Siena. According to the statutes, the president of the association is generally the Archbishop of Siena, since May 2019 Archbishop Augusto Paolo Lojudice . The General Council is the governing body of the association and is chaired by the Dominican Superior General . He is supported by the ecclesiastical assistant , the general secretary (who is also the delegate of the general superior), an executive secretary, treasurer , another secretary and three directors as department heads.

The association has national associations in four countries around the world, three in Europe and one in North America. The publication Quaderni Cateriani appears quarterly .
