Andrea Vanni (also Andrea di Vanni d'Andrea Salvani , * around 1330 in Siena ; † October 2, 1413 ibid) was an Italian painter and politician in Siena.

Life

Andrea Vanni was born to Vanni di Andrea (Salvani) and Giacoma di Vannuccio, who married in 1329. His brothers were Francesco and Cristoforo, who both also became painters. He himself was married to Petra Tavene, daughter of the notary Blasius Tavene, and had a daughter, Antonia. In 1480 he took over the sponsorship of the son of Cristofano Guidini (* around 1345 in Siena ; † 1410 ibid). Andrea Vanni was first mentioned in writing in 1349. Vanni was influenced by Simone Martini and the brothers Ambrogio and Pietro Lorenzetti . Vanni belonged to the circle of friends and students of St. Catherine of Siena . In 1353 he opened his own art workshop (Bottega) together with Bartolo di Fredi , and since 1355 he was a member of the Guild Arte dei pittori in Siena. His political career began in Montalcino in 1363 as Castellano del Cassero . In 1369 he took part in the election of the Senator and a year later became a member of the Gran Consiglio della Repubblica (Great Council of the (Senese) Republic). Another year later he held the post of gonfaloniere of the third city of San Martino . In 1373 he became envoy of Siena to Pope Gregory XI. in Avignon , then he accompanied the office of Provveditore di Biccherna in Siena around 1377 . A year later he became a member of the Balia , another later Capitano del Popolo . Between 1383 and 1385 he worked as an ambassador and painter in Naples and painted in Sicily . Vanni's best works are those in the cathedral of Siena and the portrait and fresco (1375) of Saint Catherine in the monastery of San Domenico . In Santa Maria della Scala he left the works Cristo benedicente and Sibilla che predice ad Augusto la nascita di Cristo (fresco in the sacristy of the Compagnia) in the Compagnia di Santa Maria sotto le Volte . Andrea Vanni died in Siena on October 2, 1413 or 1414. Previously, the place of his death was not settled in Siena, as he was not in the register of San Domenico, later the grave was located in the cloister.
