The International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research ( IAHR ), is a global independent non-profit organization with two secretariats in Madrid and Beijing . Founded in 1935 as the International Association of Hydraulic Engineering and Research , it has been operating under its current name since 2009. IAHR sees itself as representing the interests of the global water industry in its entire spectrum from research and construction technology to sustainability. The organization promotes international cooperation in areas such as the exploration of water bodies to maritime issues, research into the risks and consequences of floods or floods, environmentally friendly water management and all variations in connection with frozen water ( ice ) from the glaciers of the mountains to the arctic ice deserts. But questions about the construction of weirs , dykes and dams , river straightening and renaturation are also on their agenda .

IAHR sees itself as a society for the promotion and support of theory (research) and practice, with sustainability in the context of water resource management and the industrial use of water playing a special role.

In order to achieve the goals that IAHR has set for itself, it has a large number of voluntary and honorary members who provide the impetus with working groups, research meetings, congresses, special conferences and workshops . These activities are rounded off with specialist journals in cooperation with international organizations such as UN-Water , UNESCO , WMO , IDNDR , GWP , ICSU but also in cooperation with national bodies that are related to this matter. Together with the publishers Taylor & Francis and Elsevier, IAHR publishes a number of specialist journals such as the Journal of Hydraulic Research , the Journal of River Basin Management , the Journal of Water Engineering and Research , the Revista Iberoamericana del Agua RIBAGUA , the Journal of Ecohydraulics and the Journal of Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research with the Korean Water Resources Association . There is also a quarterly magazine called Hydrolink along with some e-zines .

The activities of IAHR are carried out by around one hundred elected but honorary scientists from all continents; supported by professional secretariats with offices in Madrid, on behalf of the Spain Water Consortium ( Centro de Estudios y Experimentación de Obras Públicas (CEDEX) , Direccion General del Agua , Direccion General de Costas , MAPAMA in Spain ), and the office in Beijing ( China ) sponsored by IWHR , Suez, and Hydromodel.

The leadership of the organization is elected every two years at a meeting of the members and (as of 2020) by Joseph Hun-Wei LKee ( Hong Kong ) as President and the Vice-Presidents Silke Wieprecht ( Germany ), Robert Ettema ( USA ) and Hyoseop Woo ( Republic of Korea ) guided. The General Secretaries are Ramón Gutiérrez Serret (Spain) and Jing Peng (People's Republic of China).

IAHR is a partner of the International Science Council (ICSU) and UN-Water .

The IAHR World Congress is the most important meeting of the organization with 800 to 1500 visitors from all over the world and is highly regarded as a scientific forum. The next world congress will take place in July 2021 in Granada , Spain.
