The International Association for Physical and Technical Science in Medicine (IUPESM) is an international non-governmental organization; the umbrella organization of the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP) and the International Federation for Medical and Biotechnology (IFMBE) .
history
In view of the fact that the research goals and interests of the two international scientific associations IFMBE , founded in 1959 and the IOMP , founded in 1963, overlapped in many points, a merger or umbrella organization for both societies was discussed in both organizations as early as the early 1970s.
After years of controversial discussions and also diverging interests of national members of the two organizations, representatives of both companies met at the third general assembly of the IOMP in 1973 in Gothenburg , Sweden, to negotiate a merger. As a result, it was agreed that the next General Assemblies would take place separately but at the same time and in the same city, with the year 1976 and the city of Ottawa in Canada in mind.
It then took another three years until 1979 in Jerusalem in Israel the general assemblies of the IFMBE and the IOMP were held jointly and the presidia of both associations were to prepare the negotiations for a merger and established in 1980 with the result of the establishment of the IUPESM as an umbrella organization and a legal status received.
IUPESM subsequently became an associate member and, in 1999, a full member of the International Science Council (ISC) (the successor organization to the International Science Council (ICSU), which was dissolved in 2018 ).
Mission and purpose
The main task of the IUPESM sees the representation of interests in the promotion of the physical and engineering sciences in medicine. To do this, to coordinate international collaboration and communication between those involved in science and technology in health care, activities of mutual interest in engineering and physics in health care, including international and regional scientific conferences, seminars, working groups, regional support programs, publication of scientific papers and technical publications, and to represent the professional interests and views of healthcare engineers and physicists.
In order to achieve these self-imposed tasks and goals, the IUPESM is authorized according to its statutes:
- cooperate with other international scientific and professional bodies;
- to set up committees, commissions, working groups and other bodies for their purposes within the scope of their mandates;
- Organization and coordination of international meetings or conferences for the member associations within the IUPESM including the world congress that takes place every three years;
- the representation of the IUPESM members in the International Science Council according to the statutes of the ISC;
- the dissemination, promotion and / or development of appropriate standards in the fields of technical medical physics and biomedicine in order to improve the global quality of health care;
- supporting developing countries in achieving contemporary quality in medical physics and biomedical technology;
- the provision of all possibilities for the exchange of information between nations.
The official print medium of IUPESM is the journal Health and Technology , which is published by Springer-Verlag
IUPESM World Congresses
The congresses take place every three years as a general assembly and serve as a forum for the exchange of ideas, further development and elections to the committees.
