The Internet Browser ( Japanese : イ ン タ ー ネ ッ ト ブ ラ ウ ザ ー , Intānetto Burauzā ) is a web browser designed for the Nintendo 3DS handheld game console . It was released on June 6, 2011 in Northern Europe and on June 7, 2011 in Europe , Australia and Japan via firmware update . Access to websites can be restricted since update 5.0.0-11.

An improved version of the browser was released for the newer models New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 2DS XL , which brought improvements such as playing HTML5- based videos in 2D and 3D and improved CPU performance. The New Nintendo 3DS and the XL variant can play them in higher resolution due to a faster GPU and a faster chip for decoding the videos. In addition, the new browser renders the pages faster than its predecessor.

Features

The internet browser shows Wikipedia on a Nintendo 3DS

The browser is integrated into the console's system environment and can be used while another application is open in the background. It is operated with the pen supplied, but can also be used with the analog stick or the control pad . The browser supports HTML , CSS , JavaScript and a few HTML5 elements. However, it does not play back video and music files based on Flash . It can also display 3D images with the .MPO file extension on the top screen . These and normal JPEG images can be saved on the device's SD card . Furthermore, JPEG and MPO images can be uploaded from the device's gallery. Due to limited memory, sometimes large web pages cannot be fully downloaded.

A new video player is integrated into the browser of the New 3DS, which plays both 2D videos and 3D videos based on HTML5 . This makes it possible to play YouTube videos without your own app.

The user can choose between the search engines Google and Yahoo . There is an option to automatically fit text to the size of the screen. Bookmarks can also be created. Up to 32 pages visited can be saved in the browser history before the old pages are overwritten.

The browser is based on NetFront NX v1.0 which uses the WebKit engine which is similar to that used in desktop web browsers such as Google Chrome or Apple Safari .

Games based on HTML5

According to HTML5test.com, the 3DS's browser scored 80 out of a possible 555 points, which is a higher score than the PlayStation 3's 53 and the Wii's 66 points. This is still a lower score than many modern console browsers get today. The New 3DS achieved 311 points, placing it second behind the Nvidia Shield in the mobile gaming category and third among all game consoles. The 3DS and the New 3DS can play some (but not all, according to the hardware requirements of Nintendo) HTML5 based games that have a <canvas> element and can play most CSS and JavaScript based games.

Games and animations based on CSS3

According to CSS3test.com, the browser achieved 68% of the CSS3 compatibility test. Some CSS3 animations are still displayed correctly even though they are listed as incompatible.
