Interstate

The Interstate or the FHWA Series fonts is a sans serif font . The FHWA Series fonts was developed for the United States Department of Transportation . The font is used in particular for town signs, motorway signs, railroad signs and other official information signs. Since the font was used in particular for signs on the so-called Interstate Highways , the font became common under the name Interstate . Typographer Tobias Frere-Jones designed a version of the font called Interstate for use in advertising, publishers and print products.

History and use

The Federal Highway Administration , a subdivision of the United States Department of Transportation , had taken note of the DIN 1451 standard font for traffic signs developed in Germany and has now had its own traffic font developed. The FHWA Series fonts was first used in 1949 . Since then, the font has been used across the United States for road signs . The font is also used by government agencies in Canada , Peru , Australia , New Zealand, and the Netherlands .

The Interstate digitized by Tobias Frere-Jones was published in 1993. It is used in advertising worldwide. In Germany, the font, for example, from the chain of workshops Auto-Teile-Unger , from the company Optocon and telecom Discount daughter congstar as typeface used. In France, the font was used by the Mouvement démocrate party for the top candidate François Bayrou in the 2007 French presidential election . The font was also used by the Swedish-German social music network SoundCloud .

Interstate is also the corporate font of Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg and is used on-air in most programs on rbb television .
