Tobias Frere-Jones

Tobias Frere-Jones (born  August 28, 1970 ) is an American type designer . He is the first American to be awarded the Gerrit Noordzij Prize for Typography from the Dutch Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (Royal Academy of Fine Arts) in The Hague.

Life

Frere-Jones studied graphic design at the Rhode Island School of Design , which he graduated in 1992. He then worked for The Font Bureau , Inc. in Boston . In 1999 he founded the design studio Hoefler & Frere-Jones with Jonathan Hoefler . In 2013 they dissolved their community, Frere-Jones has been working independently since then. The two founders argue in court about whether Frere-Jones was a partner or employee of the studio.

One of the most famous fonts from Hoefler & Frere-Jones is Hoefler Text , which is part of the standard Mac OS X repertoire . This font appears both in the Wikipedia logo and on the White House website . Frere-Jones has designed fonts for The Wall Street Journal , Nike , Gentlemen's Quarterly , Esquire and The New York Times Magazine , among others .

The Benton Sans font co-designed by Frere-Jones is a. used as the corporate font of frog design and the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen party . His Gotham font was used in Barack Obama's election campaign .

Frere-Jones has lectured at the Rhode Island School of Design , the Yale School of Art , the Pratt Institute , the Royal College of Art and the Universidad de las Américas .
